A warm welcome to all single mothers, you are not alone!

We all know that being a mom is the hardest and most rewarding job in the world. However, if you’re doing it on your own, in this economy, you could use a helping hand to sort out your financial issues, insurance, buying a house, remortgaging, refinancing, getting a loan or a government grant.
If you are looking to buy or rent a new house, please check out our resources, such as the Single Mother’s guide to buying a house! There are some great tips and tricks in there, about how to get a mortgage or get a government grant for single mothers to help you put a down payment on your new house.
If you are trying to start a new career, check out our career section with, for instance, our comprehensive list of do’s and dont’s of working from home. This is a niche that has been taken over by so many scammers that it’s hard to tell who to trust.
If you want to know all about getting government grants and scholarships for your kids, check out our scholarship articles.
P.S: Together we are stronger, if you are a single mother and you would like to share your experience with other single parents we would love to hear from you.

hi, i know you hear these situations all the time, well… i have a 2yr old daughter, and i work at home teaching couponing classes and i do odd jobsans sell things on ebay and basically anything to pay the bills. i jsut moved here kansas city MO. i was wanting to try and buy a house and go to school for my medical assistant. im tryingto not go for state asistance but unless its jsut for housing and i dont mean low income, i mean something that could help me get a loan for a decent house. i dont want my child to move in an unsafe neighborhood and i would like to give back in anyway i can. i just need to start school or know where to apply for grants or which school or im at a loss at where to start right now. thank you lisa.
Did u get any support? Looking myself too, same situation.
also, for all of you trying to earn money things that i do is i sell old cotton or shirts that got stained to the newpaper places so they can clean there machines, i sell box tops on ebay toward the end of the school year, when i take my child on walks, i collect cans. i use coupons on very great sales, and i use netflix instead of cable tv, if you get it through ebay they give you one month free and 15 in ebay buck(: together we can do this!!!
Hi Lisa,
I think you have the right idea, there are big and small ways in which you can make some money and economize. Sharing is another great thing: don’t buy a lawn mower/hair curler/or even a vacuum cleaner if you can share one with a friend or a neighbor! And try and shop second hand or trade. Also offer to do stuff for people rather than pay them: someone helps you with, say, setting up your TV, offer to bake them a cake or give them something you made yourself or don’t want anymore!
Please share your ideas girls!
Good luck and God bless,
Liz
why not apply at Chrysler they are hiring or GM go to hourlyjobs.com or Chrysler Careers.com. I am a single mother and work there. you may have to relocate to get the job. but people come from all over the United States to get those jobs. I have met people from Wisconsin, Tenn. and other states.

I have also stayed at some domestic violence shelters with my kids. but now 5 years later I got a decent job. I own my own house now. I had 3 kids I was raising with no child support. but a decent job has changed my life. I prayed a lot for Jesus to help me. go to Chrysler Careers.com or hourlyjobs.com

I am a 34yr old mother of 4 and i am in deseperate need of help. My lights are getting ready to be cut off. I can pay my rent and I barely can feed them. I want nothing but the best for my kids, but with a deadbeat dad and no job it is really hard. Please help me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hi Tiffany,
Whereabouts are you? There are a lot of instituions that may be able to help, also with getting a deadbeat dad to pay up, but we’ll need to know where you are?
Good luck and God bless,
Liz
try hitting food pantries, might have to get a job to help with the Utilities.
where is your location. try to do a seach on resources state wide. you may have to relocate to a state where you can get some housing or help. my prayers are for you. I know my ex is a dead beat dad. no child support now for 9 years. He lives in Texas I live in Illinois. I would have to fly to Texas to go to court. When I get the money for the flight I will. but now he owes me 50,000 in interest and penalties so we will see what happens. my advice is look for a job. get a decent sitter maybe another single mother or your older child to watch the kid so you can work. I am 48 now I pay my 19 year old $5.00 a day to watch his 9 year old sister. Try to find a decent job. First secure housing next might have to work and go to college and get trained in something. take it one day at a time it is really hard with no one to help you. Me and my 3 kids had to do it ourselves. We had no family to help us. Go to hourlyjobs.com I work at Chrysler now 5 years later and know that getting a semi decent job helps. people are coming from all over the U.S to get those jobs. I was one of the lucky ones. remember pray a lot. Jesus really does answer prayers.

what is your State location?
Money is the operative word for any single mother, right? Well I have 3 kids. Two of which are pre teens. I work a part-time job that I just found out i will be loosing in less than a month. Being partime I am not eligible for unemployment. I have gone to college and certified in EMT-B. No jobs at all for that, just volunteer. I started searching for some kind of monetary help because i am at the point where i cant get school supplies and clothes for my kids. I do get child support but it is the bare minimum by state law. Im doing all that I can to make sure my kids have what they need, but am falling short everytime. Which makes me feel like im failing them. Im in FTW Indiana if there is anything out there. School supplies and clothes are the great need at this point. Thanks for listening, God Bless, And good luck to all the awesome mommies out there given it their ALL!
Angi
Hi Angi,
Let me start by saying that you are doing a great job! Your kids know that! And they will always love you for it.
I’m afraid that these days, not a lot of aid is easy to find, but it’s still out there, if only you go out and ask for it. I know that’s unfair, but hey, those are the times.
we had a look around for kid’s resources (sorry, I’m not sure what FTW Indiana is, so I searched all of Indiana!)
but first of all: ask at your kids’ schools. They don’t like to advertise it, but they are required to offer all kinds of support to low-income families. And don’t hang about, because there’s less and less money.
Check out your local Reed Cross: they have loads of programs, food aid and they also sometimes have clothes drives. Just ask them if they do school supplies, if they don’t have them, they’ll probably ask around for donations.

Liz, Thank you for the information. I can get them 95% of the things they need it just all the little extras that come out of the woodwork. Again, Thank you
I am a single mom of one and I have a criminal record which makes it difficult to find a home and a job. I dont have any felonies and I keep making it worse by stealing things for my daughter and home. I dont have any support bc my family looks at me as if im hopeless and will be in the same boat in the next ten years. I really need help. As long as I had some kind of income, $5 or $7 dollars an hr I would be satisfied and the court system wouldnt have to worry about me. Luckily I met a good man who found us a home and is paying my rent but the area that we live in is horrible and he has a car and lets me drive it when I want so things have gotten a little better but he is coming out of pocket for everything and I need to depend on myself.
Hi Miranda,
Where are you based? Maybe we can help you find some assistance.
Kind regards & God bless,
Liz
I really liked the article, and the very cool blog
I tried to contact your email address for Veronica. Your site blocked my email. Either accept replies, or, don’t send (bleep)ing emails. To block the return email amounts to spamming. That’s illegal. Want some government intervention?
Hi Krazy,
I’m not sure what you mean, but you sound a bit upset: can I help? If you have a message for Veronica, I would gladly pass it on?
Kind regards & God bless,
Liz
Hi. I’m a single mom and have a 6y/o aqnd an 8 y/o. I have a section 8 voucher and am looking for an apartment/house. I found one about 30 miles away but can’t find a way to move my children’s beds, etc. I would like to find a house closer to my family but I’m not having any luck. Is there any moving assistance or any way to find section 8 ok housing listings? I live in Cambria County, PA.
Thanks!
Hi Catherine,
Under the section 8 voucher rules you may even, in some cases, be allowed to buy a “modest home”, so if you’re having trouble finding soemwhere suitable to rent, ask them about that option. If you are already living in section 8 housing, please be sure to notify the PHA ahead of time and make sure you are moving to PHA accepted housing!
For any questions on HUD rental programs (inlcuding section 8), you can call (toll free) (800) 955-2232
There’s also the Johnstown Housing Authority
Phone: (814)535-7771
Fax: (814)536-1768 501 Chestnut Street
Johnstown
PA 15906
I have sent them an email requesting more info, but you may just want to give them a ring yourself?
But I also found this online resource on finding Section 8 housing in Pennsylvania
Pretty neat, huh?
As to help with moving house: are you sure your family can’t help? Or a friend with a big(-ish) car? If there really is nobody, you could try your Red Cross or your local church and ask for help. If all else fails, maybe you could put an add at the local supermarket and barter for someone to help you move: bake them a cake, walk their dog for a week, mow their lawn….
Hope this helps!
God bless,
Liz
hye ,i am a mother of three children 8 yr,3yr girl & 10 month baby boy. i am alone. i can’t go outside for work with babies. i don’t have money for rent, food and bills. i live in s. ozone park, queens ny. please help me in this tuff situation . i shall be thankful to you
Hi Rupali,
We had a look around Queens.
First of all: ask at your kids’ schools. They don’t like to advertise it, but they are required to offer all kinds of support to low-income families. And don’t hang about, because there’s less and less money. Also, check out your local salvation army and Red Cross, they are there to help.
Family Services help out with all kinds of things, including after school care, so your kids can go somewhere safe and educational after school. They have homework help, they do arts and crafts etc.:

3520 Page Blvd.
St. Louis, MO 63106

Your daughter is still a bit young, but when she turns 5 we would suggest enrolling her in the Big Brothers and Big Sisters program, which is a wonderful way for her to interact with other adults, someone who’ll take her to the movies, play sports with her, help her with school.

I am a single mother of 5 children, ranging from 24 to 13. Three of my children and one 4-yr old grandson live with me. One is in prison and the other has chosen to move out with her 32 year old loser of a boyfriend. I send $20 bi-weekly to my son in prison as he needs the extra food as he lost 50 pounds (went from 175 to 125 in 5 months) and was passing out when he was first arrested and waiting at the jail to go to prison. My oldest daughter (mother of the grandchild living at home) is going to school and working part time. Unfortunately, she is unable to make her car payments and the car is currently broken down. The mechanic says it needs a new engine; however, we don’t have money for that either. She is using my van as I can find a ride to/from work.
Her friend and 3 children, ranging from 4 to 8 months, have moved in to get out of a bad situation. Get gets food stamps but no money and has no family support. She does not have a car either.
I have been doing couponing to help with the hygiene products, cleaning supplies, and food.
My daughter’s car is in my name as well as I co-signed. Since we don’t have the money, I am thinking that sending the car back sounds best but am not totally sure how this works.
I have heard about programs that will donate cars to those that are unable to buy one but are working/going to school.
Thanks for any infomation/assistance you can give me.
Hi Bonnie,
That does sound like you have quite a lot on your plate, so we’d really like to see if we can help you find some assistance. Whereabouts are you? Which state/ near which city? Then our volunteers can have a good old rummage on the web!

I am a single mom with a rough seven year old son, rough in the sense of destroying clothes and shoes. I am on assistance and just started a new position through DHS, this could very well lead to a permanent position; but my car just died, I need help with repairs, DHS won’t help unless I’m working, this could make me loose my stamps and cash! Don’t know what else to do! I’m in Murphysboro illinois.
Hi Destiny,
Good for you for getting a job! We had a look, and you could apply for TANF, temporary financial assistance, call (800) 843-6154
You could also apply for a charity car (see the article on the site).
Be sure to ask at your church, the salvation army and the Red Cross chapter near you! Also, ask your neighbors. In these cash strapped times with so much unemployment there me be someone near you, or even a group of people, who would welcome sharing the costs for their car or help pay for the repairs for your car and then you could draw up a schedule on who gets to use it when. Be sure to make a clear set of rules and don’t deviate from it!
Good luck and God bless!

Hi,
Im Marquita I am 19 I have a five year old son. I was going through some of these comments an im hoping that i can get some help or resources from this page. I am jobless I live with my grandparents with my son no type of income at all I am willing to work but after the temp agency let us go after three months I haven’t been able to find work. I live in my granparents basement and I really need help. Im in Warren, MI. I don’t know if this will really work but i need help an if this site or someone looking at this site can help me with resources for housing and job oportunities it will be greatly apreciated. my number is (1-586-801-2112)
Dear MArquita,
That does sound tough, but bless your grand parents for taking care of you!
We had a look and there are quite a few resources in Michigan, have a look: http://www.singlemotherhelp.com/information/single-mother-help-in-michigan/
Really hope this helps and you”ll find a new job soon. Keep your spirits up and God bless,
Liz
I appreciate, result in I found just what I used to be having a look for. You’ve ended my 4 day lengthy hunt! God Bless you man. Have a nice day. Bye
My realtionship of over seven years is in the process of breaking up. I am devastated.
I have four children and work at a local department store. My soon to be ex is the father of my two youngest.
He has threatened to take them if I try to leave.
I want to leave soooo badly, but I have no place to go. It is the holidays, my parents have offered to let me come home, but they don’t have the room for us; we get along very well, but can’t really live together to long anyway.
Can anyone out there help me? I am so distraught, I can’t think straight. I am not sleeping, the children are very upset. I just don’t know where to turn next. Please help.
Dear Kristy,
It does sound like you are in a tough spot.
There are however a few things you could do:
try to salvage your relationship. You loved each other once, and for the sake of the kids it may be worth trying to save what you have. It sounds like your husband still cares about you, even if he may not express himself in a loving manner. There are online resources and there are all kinds of mediation and counseling on offer. Try your local church for instance. A lot of relationships end because of lack of communication, so you could try that.
If your partner is abusive to you you could try a shelter for you and your kids.
We’d like to help further, but we’d need to know where you are?

Hi. I would like to give a warm, heart felt “Thank you” to all the volunteers/managers of this site. I am a single mom of a 2.5 yr old in northern VA. I have been raising my son alone since birth. I came here searching for single parent support groups, but found you. I am touched by the assistance and compassion you show to these families. Thank you. Sincerely, Andrea.

hi i’m a single mom of 2 kids age 6 and 2.My ex is now living U S and entered US ARMY .I just found that he never declared our kids.He left us last 2009 and he never came home to see our kids.I’m trying to find ways how to get my kids benefits from their us army father. Were not married but I know that my kids has the right to known by their father.pls help me to find ways.I’t really hard for me because were renting the house my daughter’s school and their daily needs please please help me guys.
thanks
Hi Piccola,
Luckily the army doesn’t like deadbeat dads any more than we do! First thing you should do is contact your nearest military base and explain the situation. You’ll need all te info you can find on your ex, so social security number birth date etc. Be prepared to have a dna test done, but after that you should be getting child support and possibly even be able to claim healthcare on the military.
Good luck and God bless!

Hello,
My name is Shirley. I live in Cleveland, Mississippi, where I am currently going to college for my Bachelors degree in Social Science education. I came across this web site while looking for an image to blog about the terror I feel at living here, alone, with no help at all. I am a single mother, as well, and I have been divorced from my ex for about two years now, although I have to admit that being married to him still felt like I was a single mom. I am looking for employment here, but I haven’t been able to find any. I live in family housing, which is really great as my financial aid pays for it, but I still have other bills (day care, car insurance, etc.) that I need a job to pay for, but I can’t find employment that is willing to work with my school schedule, and school is much more important right now, since to live in family housing I have to be considered full-time, and I am from a town four hours away. I only have two more years before having my degree, and once I have my degree there are lots of programs I can apply to for assistance with paying back my student loans. I don’t know any one in town, as I just moved here at the beginning of January, and I have no support system whatsoever. I am looking for help finding employment as well as just help with being a mom. I’m twenty-one, and am absolutely clueless when it comes to raising my (now three) daughter. I feel like I’m doing it wrong. It’s overwhelming, being left alone with no assistance and no one to talk to at all. If you could find a moment to reply, I would greatly appreciate it.
If you find any information or resources about employment, it might be beneficial for me to say that I do have an Associates of Arts degree and I do have employment history, although it is mostly in retail and the fast food industry. I am not picky about what kind of job I find, so long as I find one. Thank you for your time.
Sincerely,
Shirley
Hi Shirley,
How very brave of you! We all know how overwhelming life as a single mom can be at times, but you are very brave, and wise, for looking for help.
I will have our volunteers have a look at resources that may be helpful for you, but for now, firstly: check with your college. They will be able to point you towards resources for single moms. Also they may have their own assistance programs to help you out, some colleges for instance provide daycare. Another source of hope and help is your local church, if you belong to one?
There are also many free, online resources on coping with a child on your own. for instance: http://raisingchildren.net.au/articles/a_childs_contribution.html/context/999 and http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/single-parent/MY01709. And how to get child support.
Good luck and God bless!

Hello,
I am a single mother of a beautiful 2 1/2 yo daughter. Over a year ago I found out that my fiance was cheating on me. Not to mention he has chemical dependency issues. Which now I am able to feel grateful for leaving. I was a stay at home mom because we couldn’t afford the daycare for me to work. My daughter and I moved had to move into my mothers home and now I work off my rent by billing for her private MFT practice. Ironically, my father cheated on my mother about the same time and now we are healing on our own and gaining strenght bit by bit. I am currently on tribal TANF in Shingle Springs, Ca., where I actually found a flyer for your website. As much as I am blessed to have this help, I have to say that it hasn’t been much help lately. Although there is a child support order, he doesn’t pay the ammount set by the court. My monthly grant has been postponed until the Government releases the funds and I haven’t been reimbursed for my child care and other supportive services in a few months. Not because of anything that I had done or not done. With their help I was able to return to school at a local JC, studying Chemical
Dependency Counseling/Psychology, but cannot attend school tomorrow for my first test because I have no money for child care, food, gas, etc… I’ts so hard being in this prediciment and I feel all of the other single mothers pain. I ‘ve read some of the other stories and feel grateful that at least I have a roof over my head and a safe place for my daughter and I to live temporarily. Though, I think temporary will be a lot longer than I suspected! I don’t make much every month, just barily enough to get by. If there is any kind of help for someone like me, could you let me know? To all the other single mothers, let’s stay strong. God hasn’t forgot us. Kiss your children and be grateful for what we have, even if it isn’t very much.
Thank you and God Bless!
Melissa

Hello, I am curious if there is any assistance available for my daughter and grandson in the Nampa Idaho area. She drives a school bus so that she has daycare for her son, as she has had an extremely difficult time finding a reputable sitter on the weekends. This job also gives her time to be a mom. Currently I am paying the portion that she cannot get assistance to cover on daycare and it is expensive. She is in a catch 22. If she makes too much then they will loose all assistance, but on part time it surely makes for a tight budget. She is a very hard worker and this is mentally draining on her not to be able to work full time to supply their needs, but as I stated above, if she goes over the threshold she is penalized for it. Do you have any ideas? They are currently in a very small 1 bedroom apt. but, that keeps her powerbill low. I appreciate your time.
Sincerely,
Anita
Hi,
First off i want to say thank you for your help in advance. This is a very helpful site. I am requesting any help/suggestions for my mother. She is 45 and has my two little sisters to take care of. One is 17 and one is 7. They are about to be homeless and have no vehicle. I am 26 years old and have a 9 year old daughter of my own to take care of. I live in a small two bedroom with my boyfriend and my daughter and am looking for help for my mom. We live in palm beach county Florida. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank You.
Hey Liz, my name is Kristy and I work for a ministry in Newport, Arkansas that is currently accepting applications for single mothers with children. We want to help them get on their feet by providing a home, utilities paid, food provided, and help them to get a job. We would really like to find someone with 3 or more children. The mother has to be able to pass a background check and be a christian and live morally correct. For more info you can email me at newlifechildrenshome10@yahoo.com.
Thanks Kristy
Hi Kristy,
that sounds like a wonderful idea!
And I would love to know more about all the good work you do, do you have a website with more info?
kind regards and God bless,
Liz
Being a small businessperson, you haven’t any greater leverage compared to truth.
Failure doesn’t suggest you’re a failure it just means have not succeeded yet.

I honestly just need a place to vent. In Dec of ’09 I was laid off. After 2 years of trying to find work I finally got a min wage job in a call center an hour drive from home(ie half my check went to gas). Two weeks after I started My fiance proposed to me and that weekend we got pregnant. When the morning sickness kicked in 3 weeks after conception I lost my new job. A couple weeks later he lost his job. He has been looking for work now for about a year, unsuccessfully. When I had the baby, me and her moved in with my folks. We spend weekends with him when we can but his landlord has specified No Kids (he’s renting a room off the guys house so the landlord knows when we visit). Today the landlord gave him a 60 day vacate notice. Not because he missed rent or anything, just that the guy no longer wants to rent the room out. On top of that he has 1 month before his unemployment runs out. I can’t work because our baby is only 6 months old. The cost of daycare in our area would mean that if I can find a full time job at minimum wage I would afford daycare and have 30$ left at the end of the week for bus fare, food, formula and anything else we’d need (that’s only with us still living at my folks house). My fiance can’t move in with us because my folks won’t allow us to sleep under the same roof because it’s inappropriate. I am trying to hold my head up and keep the tears at bay but I feel so filled with dispair.
ps, i know since I have a fiance I’m not technically a single mom, but since I’m so far raising her without his help I almost am.
Hello,
I am a mother of 3. I just recently relocated back home to Albany, Ga, due to the high cost of living in Florida. Since I have been back I have been unable to find work and have been force to live with my aunt and uncle, where my three kids and I share a full size bed. We don’t have room for any of the things that we were able to revive from fire ( storage unit in Fl caught a fire with all my belongings beside the ones me and my kids brought). As the days pass I am becoming depressed. My kids are being affected in a major way. Don’t know where to turn because everywhere i have gone to get assistance I was turned down.
Please help
M.Love
Hi Mesha,
You have been unlucky with the fire, however, it is very kind that your aunt and uncle are letting all of you stay! Kind people are all around, even if things look tough right now. Which types of assistance did you try? We will have a look at options in and around Albany. For now, have a look at out special Georgia page and try getting creative when looking for a job. If you have access to internet, you could do some work online, such as becoming a virtual assistant or doing data entry. If you have access to a car, you could help people pick stuff up or deliver goods. Have a look at our other suggestions here .
Good luck and God bless,
Liz
Hi, I just came across this website and I had no idea how many people need help. I am a single homeless mother looking for a place to live and a job. I have many job qualities, but no GED. I have worked for a doctor as a receptionist, did billing, appointments, medical coding and pretty much anything you can do at a doctors office. I also have worked in sales and also do handcrafts and pretty much anything I can learn. My children have been without school for the past 2 months since to be honest I am embarrassed to let people know my situation. I am in desperate need of help and don’t know what to do. Any suggestions?
Hi Jo,
I think you nee to fess up and tell your friends and your family you need help. Most jobs and houses are found via your network. There are bound to be loads of people who want to help, all you have to do is ask. You haven’t said where you are from, please let us know then we can look for some help near you, but in general: try your local church and contact social services. They all want to help.
Good luck and God bless,
Liz
Hello,
I am mother of two and i need assistance with furniture..My housing juust came thru and i have no furniture..I reside in Georgetown SC..Which is not to far from myrtle Beach sc,a hr away from harleston and two hrs away from Columbia. If u have any resources i would greatly appreciate it.
As a single mom of three, on my own for 11 years with no financial or other needed support from anyone, I often have to remind myself that the only thing that is certain, is that all things change. Children grow up and even though the days seem long, the years go by fast.
On a different note, Sears stores have this free club called Kids Advantage. If or when your kids wear out their clothes before they out grow them, you can take them back to Sears no receipt required and exchange the used, worn, even torn up clothes and shoes for new ones in the same size and brand. Now this has become the only way I can get clothes for my kids that are new. What we do is go to the thrift store and buy the brands that Sears carries (like Levys, Canon Blues, Vans) and then exchange them at Sears for the new ones. This is no loss to Sears as the manufactors reimburse Sears for every returned and worn out item they exchange, as long as it is a name brand clothing item or shoe brand they sale. Sizes new born to 18 in big kids. As in 18 years old size! Boys and girls! Kids Advantage club! It’s awesome!
And ladies, except nothing but the best for yourselves regardless of where you’ve been, or where you are. The best is whatever reminds you that you are a queen no matter what is going on in your life. You deserve the best and no one can give that to you except you. Because only you truely know what is best for you. And we will find the light in the darkness, we will.
Much respect! Teach the world there is enough of everything for everyone. Know it in your heart. Live it in your deeds. Sow it in your children because they are tomorrows seeds.
I am 32, my daughter is 18 months, no support, neither government nor child support, I want to go to university to study like I planned before I was pregnant as I see that the only chance to make enough money in a while to give her a good life. So far I have nothing, staying at ppls houses as long as it works out, no car, no job (lost my job 3 weeks ago), no social security number, neither me nor the baby. Any idea what to do? Her dad run off and left the country, we came back to the states when my son was 4 weeks old. So he is not a citizen, I am not.
